District 31 & 75 Performing Arts Night

The District 31 & 75 Performing Arts Night is an annual event which showcases and celebrates the arts programs in Staten Island's public schools. Each year, it is held in May at the Michael J. Petrides School. Ms. Erica Mattera, the principal of PS 11 and a coordinator for this event, invited me and Alexa Moley (Miss Staten Island's Outstanding Teen) to attend on May 29th. We were delighted!
Right from work, I made my way to the school to meet Alexa, her mom, and my parents. We were all set to enjoy a night of fantastically talented students. We were first directed to the "VIP" room, where we enjoyed some pre-show snacks. It was great to see some friends and to mingle with new people, as well.
Once it was showtime, we were ushered into the auditorium, which was filled with proud parents and families. First to the stage were two vibrant and outgoing students who would be our hosts for the night. I was so impressed by their charisma on stage! The young girl and boy had cue cards, but neither of them even needed to read from their notes! It was incredible how they could "wing it" and be completely fluid the entire time. I know that I would have never been able to do that in 5th grade!
Each act was completely different from the last and they were all wonderful. From dancers, to bands and even karate, we saw it all!
I was particularly impressed with Intermediate School 61. The school, which has its own widely recognized performing arts/dance program, brought to the stage two beautiful dance pieces. I was so moved by the performance that I got up to go find them backstage once they were done!
It is reassuring to see that the performing arts are still alive and well in our public schools. Too often we hear of these programs being the first to go once budgets are cut, but with the help of parents and teachers were are keeping them going! Our children need to become well-rounded and develop necessary skills through the arts. Thank you to Erica Mattera for not only having me and Alexa at the District 31 & 75 Performing Arts Night, but also for continuing to grow this event each year and show the importance of our public school's art programs. We had a lot of fun and hope to return next year!
